Sound Messages Week One Update
The sound messages course has gotten off to a very progressive start after it's first week. Each class has been combined with the two elements of learning that give this course it's quality: live performances from students and critical analysis of the messages in popular music and live poetry.
We studied some lyrical content from Lauryn Hill, as well as other influential artists. The students also critiqued a diverse array of poetry from the SLAM poetry series Def Poetry Jam.
Furthermore, the students have begun writing scripts for their first audio project. They are writing profiles of themselves and combining that with three pieces of music that represent their individuality. We begin recording our scripts today.
The sound messages course is developing into a factory of critical thinking and exciting creativity.
Please enjoy a small sound messages from one of our students Dre. He says it best, 'Express Yourself!'

West End Students to see Selma
Thanks to Rainbow Cinemas, West End students, along with students from other Alt9 schools, have an opportunity to enjoy a private screening of “Selma” on February 12th. The film is based on the 1965 political marches from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. These marches demonstrated the desire for African-Americans to exercise their constitutional right to vote. This 54 mile march eventually led to the “Voting Rights Act” whereby restrictions preventing African-Americans from voting were lifted.
